The Futurologist Alvin Toffler first coined the time period ‘prosumer’ in his 1980 e book ‘The Third Wave’. The Third Wave expanded upon predictions that Toffler had been making since the early 1970s, suggesting that over time expertise would blur the beforehand distinct traces between ‘producer’ and ‘client’, gradually merging the two roles into one. The portmanteau ‘prosumer’ expresses the merging of these two roles by taking the first a part of the phrase ‘producer’ and the second a part of the word ‘shopper’.
